I am happy to report that we have recently engaged in an open and productive negotiation process with the administration, as witnessed by our newly ratified Memorandum of Agreement on Pay Rate for Adjunct Faculty for Non-Teaching Work. There has been no pay rate in the adjunct contract for faculty who engage in some essential non-teaching activities. While some adjuncts did receive payment for work approved by their chairs and the Dean of Academic Affairs, there was no consistent policy for this, and the rate used was below the rate paid to Full Time Educators.  Our collegial work with the administration resulted in an agreement on a rate of pay that is equivalent to that of Full-Time Educators. During the negotiation sessions, we openly discussed ideas and issues, and we brainstormed together on clear wording that would be easily understood. This is a very positive indicator of things to come as we approach negotiations for our contracts, which expire on August 31, 2015.
